abstract = {Background: We needed evidence as to which exercises are appropriate in conservative treatment of patients with chronic lumbalgy. Objective: To render an account of the effect of a kinesitherapeutic program of special exercises for endurance of the flexor trunk muscles in patients with chronic lumbalgy. Methods: The study included 110 patients diagnosed with chronic lumbalgy, who were equally distributed in two treatment groups. Participants in the experimental group performed the recommended special exercises 3 times a week at home, while those in the control group only followed the guidelines of a physician. At the beginning of the study and 12 months later the endurance of flexor trunk musculature was assessed by means of the Shirado-Ito test. Results: The participants in the experimental group at the end of observation were reported to experience satisfactory improvements in the endurance of the flexor trunk muscles as a result of the implemented special exercises. Participants in the control group at the same stage were reported to undergo aggravation of painful symptoms and had no improvement in the endurance of the flexor trunk muscles. Conclusions: Treatment with specific exercises proved more effective in terms of endurance of the flexor trunk muscles than the normally prescribed medication in patients with chronic lumbalgy.},
