abstract = {This study examines the in-game currency of World of Warcraft, an MMORPG created by Blizzard Entertainment. The economy of the virtual world is vast and complex, considering that it is practically a closed free-market economy. The value of the game’s virtual currency is examined through the fluctuation of the value of purchasable in-game items as well as the fluctuating real-world exchange rates in currency. Therefore, it was important to examine the real-world currency fluctuation as well as the price development of the examined in-game item between weekly or biweekly intervals during a 16 months long period. It was observed that the value of World of Warcraft’s currency plummeted heavily against real-world currencies across the world after the release of the game’s newest expansion pack in August 2016. This observation leads to confirming the hypothesis that the release of a new expansion pack leads to a vast increase in money supply, effectively reducing the currency’s value.
