A New Generic Model for the Management System of University’s Third Mission. Case Study in Romania

Abstract

The article aims to support the better understanding and actions related to the university’s Third Mission, through a holistic and process-based approach. The study includes: a theoretical background; a review of some publications that address to the system approach and management of technology transfer, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship, three fields generally associated with the university’s Third Mission; a new generic model for the management system of the university’s Third Mission. The proposed model is based on the European standard CEN/ TS 16555-1- Innovation Management System, but its adaptation to higher education institutions is a novelty. The case study included in the paper illustrates some fundamental aspects of this approach. The research findings are important for academics and researchers, creating the framework for future studies on the ways for developing and optimizing innovation systems appropriate to university particularities. They can also be a useful guide for decision makers on institutional development in the context of the Third Mission, both at national and institutional level.
