Abstract

The obligation to include the principles of sustainable development in socio-economic and sectoral policies, as well as in the strategies of the European Union, makes sustainable development play a major role in setting directions for the development of industry, including transport. The current efficient and effective transport system should take into account relations with the environment along with the changes taking place in it. Sustainable transport is also referred to as environmentally sustainable transport or an environmentally sustainable system. Sustainable transport is included in international and national strategic documents on transport development and other declarations. Based on Eurostat data and scientific publications, the author of this article analysed sustainable transport according to its properties, its determinants contributing to the implementation of sustainable transport assumptions in Polish cities. Next, indicators and tools for the implementation of sustainable transport were characterised.
