Abstract

This paper focuses on using the various path loss models to creating radio environment maps (REMs). The REMs are used in many applications to plan and manage modern wireless networks, especially those based on cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access technologies. This approach affects the efficiency of wireless network management. It is significantly viewed in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) used in the military, where the situation could be more dynamic. The use of path loss models to create propagation attenuation maps for the REMs enables assessing the coverage and range of radio network elements, i.e., nodes. In this paper, we present an idea of the REM and survey of path loss models, which could use for their crating. In this overview, the statistical and topography-based models are described. The selected path loss models from these two groups are used to show the differences between the REMs obtained based on them.
