The relevance of the issues of sustainable development of business and society at the turn of the millennium in the context of global changes and manifestations of the exhaustion of the technocratic model of development is considered. The transition to a model of sustainable development should be accompanied by radical changes in the public consciousness, human attitude to the world. There are the results of research that revealed the driving forces of sustainable business development, combining state regulation and the interests of consumers and employees of the company. There are also identified reasons that hinder the implementation of the concept. The large-scale transformations in the country, political and economic modernization should be accompanied by an advanced modernization of public consciousness.
