The Impact of Grant Support for Talented Youth on Their Career Growth in The Field of Science

Abstract

In the 21st century, the key resource for the development of any state is human potential in the scientific and engineering sphere, which has unique competencies and ensures the generation of new knowledge. To stimulate the attraction of talented young people to the R&D sector, all countries use a variety of tools to support them. The authors of the article analyzed the international experience of attracting talented youth to the scientific and engineering sphere, identified the most popular supporting tools, and analyzed the effectiveness of the implemented measures of Russian state support for talented youth in the scientific and engineering sphere using the example of grants from the President of the Russian Federation.

The article shows the impact of grant support received within the framework of competitions held by the Council for Grants of the President of the Russian Federation in the period from 2011 to 2016 on the career growth of young scientists, Candidates and Doctors of Science. The authors presented the results of the analysis of the age structure of the grant holders; analysis of young researchers supported by grants in reference to their scientific fields, as well as what changes have occurred in the career trajectory of the recipients of grants of the President of the Russian Federation during the study period, based on their positions, as of June 2021.

The study allowed the authors of the article to conclude that the received grants from the President of the Russian Federation have an impact on the career growth of young scientists. Most of the Candidates and Doctors of Sciences received promotions, which indicates that this tool for supporting young researchers contributes to their consolidation in science and is aimed at developing human resources in scientific and engineering sphere.
