Overtourism – The Antecedents of the Notion, Impact Monitoring and Future Perspectives

Abstract

The paper focuses on overtourism, a relatively new word that describes the hazards brought by the global travel boom to destinations. As the problem of excessive tourism has got a much longer tradition in scientific literature, the paper identifies numerous notions anteceding overtourism. The author of the study posits that the discussion on overtourism should focus on the impact of contemporary tourism on territories and therefore a framework for monitoring the impact of tourism on a destination is introduced. Furthermore, this paper includes a review of contemporary determinants of tourism growth, followed by an analysis of potential solutions to overtourism. In the conclusions the author provides a set of recommendations referring to tourism impact monitoring and potential solutions to the phenomenon of overtourism.
