Abstract

The aim of this paper is to assess the prospects for the development of urban literary tourism in Gdansk. The article explores the means of heritage interpretation which can be used to create literary tourism products. The role of effective interpretation in the development of sustainable cultural tourism is emphasized. An overview of selected forms of contemporary interpretation of Gdańsk’s literary heritage was made. Moreover, in order to identify all the factors that may affect the development of literary tourism in Gdańsk, a SWOT analysis was conducted. Recommendations for interpreting literary heritage were proposed. The study indicates the need to strengthen the role of Gdańsk’s literary heritage in promoting the city’s tourism. The potential of Gdańsk’s literary heritage is not fully exploited. In order to create and develop innovative products of literary tourism it is essential to implement diverse forms of interpretation. Complex and collaborative approach to future literary tourism development is recommended, involving cooperation between academia, tourism industry and the local government. Gdańsk case study can serve as an example of analysing the possibilities of developing literary tourism in other cities. It can be the basis for further research and taking actions to develop literary tourism in Gdańsk.
