Abstract
Quality of life deteriorates with age by changing important body functions. Decreased physical, cognitive and social capacities lead to increased dependence on basic services. The paper describes the assistive technologies (AT) as well as their role in supporting the self-care and independence of the elderly. Customized solutions using assistive technologies are presented. The case study presents an ongoing solution that supports elderly-centered health services by providing monitoring and evaluation of the elderly health status and activities in a smart environment. The major concern, in this sense, is to ensure optimal access to assistive technology for the elderly, aiming at the impact on quality of life, health and social involvement.
