Ferry Travel in The Baltic and North Sea Regions and The Drivers of Eco-Friendly Solutions

Abstract

There is a general trend in modern maritime transport consisting in the use of environmentally friendly solutions. The progressing globalization and integration, coupled with the reported increase in trade volume, have spurred an increase in transport needs for the passenger and cargo travel handled by ferry carriers. Owing to their geographic location and geological conditions, ferry travel in the Baltic and North Sea regions has witnessed substantial development in recent years, manifested among others in the use of eco-friendly solutions.

The aim of the article is to shed light on the rationale behind the use of eco-friendly solutions in ferry transport and to identify the opportunities and threats for ferry travel in the Baltic and North Sea regions. The article is of a review nature. The following methods were used: narrative literature review, synthesis, and methods of logical reasoning (deduction, induction, and abduction).
