Abstract

In the current research, we validated the abusive supervision scale in Polish organizational setting. In two studies, we tested a full and a short form of the scale, and examined its psychometric properties. In study 1 (N = 934), we explored one-factor structure of both forms of the abusive supervision scale. In study 2, using an independent sample of employees (N = 463), we have confirmed the one-factor structure of both forms of the scale. Reliability parameters have yielded satisfactory levels for both forms. The two studies provided support for the predictive validity of the abusive supervision scale in the context of various work-related variables. We have found significant relationships between abusive supervision and perceptions of low trust in management and coworkers, diminished organizational justice ow effectiveness and low satisfaction. Heightened stress indicators such as somatic, cognitive, and emotional responses, offensive behaviors among co-workers like gossiping and conflicts, counterproductive work behaviors like sabotage, abuse, withdrawal and theft and low work engagement were positively related to abusive supervision. The abusive supervision scales, in a full and a short form, are thus valid and reliable measures of the perception of abusive supervision in Polish organizations.
