This article presents a revolutionary approach to the construction of IT infrastructure for such a critical sector as power industry, based on the ideas of fog computing.
Fog computing enables the power industry to store measurement data reliably and safely on a large scale. No theoretical algorithm, even the most sophisticated one, can withstand the challenge of rapid real-time analysis of large measurement data quantities. This is what fog computing used in critical infrastructure areas, such as power grids, provides, and it is currently the most promising tool. Undoubtedly, apart from a strategic discussion on the scale and depth of changes, it will be vital to carry out a number of pilot solution tests that will allow for the development of the ICT layer used in the energy sector, and to support the reached position with the analysis of current solutions. Pilot tests are currently being carried out in the Polish energy sector for applications of IT systems based on fog computing technologies. If scaling up to the entire power industry is possible, it will mean a leap forward in improving the stability and efficiency of power networks.
