Abstract

The aim of the article is to present and analyse potential threats posed by underestimating the influence of information security on the functioning of organisations. The immense influence of information security on organisations should not be ignored, as even the smallest decision in an organisation is based on the flow of information. Taking this into account the author deems information to be the most important factor which determines the functioning of an organisation. Such a formulation requires a description of the influence of information security management on proper and efficient functioning of organisations. The term information is becoming a key category, a central point of consideration which is a common set for research conducted at an intersection of various fields and scientific disciplines. When discussing organisations, their activities and functioning, it is necessary to include the role of information. Based on collected information and source literature the author intends to introduce the complexity of the term information, information security and its influence of shaping organisations. Based on the collected observations and literature analysis, the author wishes to present the complexity of the notion of information, information security, and its impact on the shaping of organisations. The author believes that most studies focus on technical threats connected with processing information, and do not devote enough attention to the significance of information, its value or the threats connected with this. The author wishes to highlight that numerous studies and participant observation show that many organisations underestimate information security. In fact, the top management and employees of many organisations show a lack of competence in the scope of the role and significance of information in organisations.
